Producer Ricky Kirshner knows how to put on a big show. After handling the Super Bowl, a NATO summit and four national political conventions, he was ready for the Democratic gathering in Denver.

Then he learned that the convention starting Monday would move from the 20,000-seat Pepsi Center to 76,000-seat Invesco Field for Barack Obama’s acceptance speech on the final night, Thursday.

Kirshner’s reaction?

"After taking oxygen for about an hour …" he said, letting the punch line hang in the air before continuing. "I said to my partner, one thing we’re lucky about is that we’ve done so many stadium shows."

This time around, it’s both timing and size that count.

There’s the issue of shifting the convention from one venue to another in one evening, and having to work around football games scheduled at Invesco within a couple days of the convention’s opening and closing.

The plan was to bring equipment into the stadium this weekend and then "caravan over" from the Pepsi Center after events wrap there Wednesday night, Kirshner said. "We’ll rehearse a little and then show up Thursday and hope to do it."

Afterward, he has 48 hours to clear out for next Sunday’s game between the University of Colorado and Colorado State.

Kirshner considers it worth the stress.

"I have my team with me, I know what we’re getting into. It’s not easy, but at the end of the day it’s going to be one of the most historic things ever, and how can you not want to be a part of it?" Kirshner said Friday from Denver.

The event at the Pepsi Center isn’t small scale, by any measure.

About 400 people, including stagehands and technical crews, are at work as RK Productions oversees the design, installation and operation of set, light and audio systems. The company also is responsible for entertainment; even signs and banners are part of Kirshner’s portfolio.

But it’s the video displays that tend to make the biggest splash.

"Every time you do one of these, you try to do something technologically advanced that people haven’t seen before," Kirshner said.

That was a wall of 56 video cubes at the 1992 Democratic convention. This time around, Kirshner said, the set offers some 8,000 square feet of video panels with the flexibility to provide a changing background for each speaker.

At heart, a political convention is "a big corporate meeting," he said, which his company also routinely produces.

And no matter how dramatic the gathering or Obama’s stadium speech turns out to be from a political standpoint, as a production it won’t have the punch of, say, a Beijing Olympics ceremony.

"Their budget was a lot more than ours and they had a lot more free labor," Kirshner said.

Matt Damon thinks Americans should be more internationally-focused.

"I think many of our problems as a country would be solved if people had thick passports," the actor, 37, tells Conde Nast Traveler in its September issue.

"There’s just no substitute for actually going and seeing things," he says.

Damon, who says only 21 percent of Americans have passports, says that fame has made him want to do good.

"You start to feel a level of responsibility to direct attention to things that actually matter more than to silly things like who you’re dating," he explains.

"For a lot of actors, our biggest fear is that we’re going to start talking about things we don’t fully understand and sound like idiots," he says. "In the long run, I’ll do much more good if, when I open my mouth, I have something worth saying."

The father of 2-year-old daughter Isabella and step-father to 10-year-old Alexia is expecting a baby girl this fall with wife Luciana.

Damon described a trip to Tanzania, where he visited a clinic and witnessed children receiving anti-malarial medicine.

"I realized that because of President Bush’s malaria initiative, this baby had survived," he told the magazine. "American taxpayer money saved this baby’s life."

He has encouraged both presidential candidates to increase aid to Africa.

"When you go to a country and see your fellow Americans feeding people or getting clean water or saving their lives, you are really seeing the best of us. We are exporting the best of who we are and who we should be," he says.

Damon also reflected on his rise to global stardom.

"I remembered as a kid sitting with Ben Affleck, dreaming of someday going to New York and becoming actors," he recalls. "Dreaming is a great thing."

The Dark Knight was truly an epic movie that brought the meaning of "villain" back to life.  I could almost argue that it should have been called The Joker, but that would cause to much chaos.  From the minute you sit down and then almost three hours later, you still want more of this film.  Sure, Christian Bale has that sound like he’s got gunk in his throat, but that’s not what has you on the edge of your seat and saying, "I’m gonna have to see this again!"

You don’t really ever get the whole story of how the new Joker has come to be or why he does the things he does, but this is a whole new Joker and will never be again.  Ledger’s performance is far better than anyone could have ever expected.  He’s funny, wait, scary, no, creepy.  Can there be another Batman installment?  I’m not so sure we can expect one any time soon.
